I once watched a fully loaded HOWO dump truck lose its brakes on a downhill grade outside Kumasi. The driver did everything by the book—downshifted, pulled the engine brake, aimed for the runaway ramp—but the truck was just too heavy, the ramp was too short, and he ended up in a ditch. Miraculously, nobody was killed.
The post-accident teardown showed that three of the four brake chambers on the drive axles had torn diaphragms. They hadn’t failed all at once; they’d been bleeding pressure for months. The driver had complained about a “soft pedal,” but he was told it was “just air in the lines.” It wasn’t air. It was a failure of basic, scheduled maintenance.

Most HOWO and Shacman trucks run a dual-circuit pneumatic system that is, at its heart, very similar to European gear. You’ve got the engine-driven air compressor, the air dryer, reservoirs, and a series of valves modulating air to the chambers.
It’s designed to be fail-safe—if one circuit leaks, the other should still stop the truck. But that only works if the components aren’t already halfway to failure. “Fail-safe” doesn’t mean “neglect-proof.”

For trucks built post-2018, you’ve got an electronic brain (part WG9716582011 for Shacman) managing the ABS and braking force. It’s a sealed module, but it lives under the chassis, bathing in grit, water, and heat.
When the BCU acts up, it’s not always a hard failure. You’ll get intermittent ABS lights, or the truck will “feel” different under braking. Generic OBD scanners won’t help you here—you need a diagnostic tool that speaks the Sinotruk or Shaanxi protocol. If you’re in a remote area, having a spare BCU is worth every penny of the investment.
The air dryer is the most ignored component on the truck. Its job is to pull moisture out of the system. Once the desiccant cartridge is saturated, water goes into your reservoirs.
Water turns into rust. Rust flakes off and travels through the air lines, scoring your valve seals and turning your expensive pneumatic valves into junk. Worse, in cold climates or high altitudes, that water freezes. Ice in a brake valve equals zero brakes.
Pro-tip: Check your reservoir drain valves daily. If you’re seeing oil or water, your air dryer cartridge is overdue. If you never see water because the valve is “always clean,” check if the valve is seized shut.
I’ve investigated a lot of brake failures, and they all tell the same story: the driver knew something was wrong. The pedal felt different. The compressor was running too much. The low-air buzzer started chirping earlier than usual.
These trucks talk to you. If your brakes feel soft, it isn’t “just air in the lines.” It’s a component nearing the end of its life. Listen to the truck, replace the worn parts, and buy quality components from suppliers who actually know what they’re selling. When you’re at 80 km/h with 40 tons behind you, the last thing you want is a “cheap” part failing.
